Electric Vehicles Update

The death of EV sales has been greatly exaggerated

Oct 27,2024 – Chris Hatch – Zero Carbon

“Losing momentum? Not in the big picture,” Trevor Melanson from Clean Energy Canada told me this week. “The curve is not always a smooth line. It’s not always going to be cleanly exponential, but this narrative about slowing sales is a function of the media looking for controversy.”

Buy an EV, save $3,000 per year? A new report says so

Oct 24, 2024 – Electric Autonomy

Clean Energy Canada releases new data that demonstrates the potential cost savings of adopting clean technologies, like EVs.

Switching from gas vehicles to electric can lead to significant annual savings for Canadians.

The report finds EVs “by far” provide the single biggest annual cost savings for Canadian households — and there are other wallet-friendly changes too

EV sales have not fallen, cooled, slowed or slumped. Stop lying in headlines.

Here’s what’s actually happening: Over the course of the last year or so, sales of battery electric vehicles, while continuing to grow, have posted lower year-over-year percentage growth rates than they had in previous years.

Vehicle to Grid (V2G): The promise of powering homes and the grid from EV batteries is becoming a reality

The idea that people, companies, and communities can draw power from EV batteries during power failures, or simply as a way to hedge against high electricity rates during costly peak periods of demand, isn’t new. But what this Quebec example shows is that it has begun to shift from a prospect to a reality. Just imagine: your house charges your car, and then during a power outage, your car charges your home. Electric trucks and buses show staggering sales growth in Europe

March 20, 2024 – the Driven

The market share of fully electric trucks and buses is growing at a staggering pace in Europe, according to a new report from the International Council on Clean Transport (ICCT).

The ICCT says 11,000 zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles were sold in Europe in 2023, more than double the 5,000 sold in 2022, and 18% of all buses and coaches sold in the EU in 2023 were electric. It says 5% of light and medium trucks and 1% of heavy trucks were also electric.

As Clean Energy Canada’s Stefan Pauer and Clean Energy Review co-author Keri McNamara wrote in a new op-ed in the Toronto Star, “clean energy is a win-win for climate and cost.” Head to the report for more.

Northern Ontario sees more electric vehicle registrations in 2023
Now more than 1,000 registered EVs in Sudbury

The City of Sault Ste. Marie, in partnership with the city’s utility company and Sault Climate Hub, held an EV showcase last fall to share people’s real-world experiences with electric vehicles. (Submitted by Emily Cormier)

Jan 31, 2024 – CBC news

The number of Sudburians registering electric vehicles grew at a faster pace than the Ontario average in 2023, according to provincial data and the Electric Vehicle Society of Greater Sudbury.

The EV Society, which took its figures from Ontario’s dataset, said there were 1,088 EVs registered in Sudbury as of December, 2023, which it said was an increase of 49 per cent over the previous year.

That’s slightly higher than the Ontario-wide increase of 45 per cent, according to the EV Society.

Oct 24, 2023 – Carbon Brief – Simon Evans

Electric vehicles (EVs) significantly cut lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions in almost all circumstances and are the key technology for decarbonizing road transport.

While not having a car has even larger climate benefits, many peoples’ ability to go car-free is limited by their circumstances and the availability of alternatives.

This means EVs are “likely crucial” for tackling transport emissions, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
